Geniuses of speech, orators, know how to communicate with the crowd. Oratory is an invaluable skill with which a person can beautifully present, frame and express any thought both for a single interlocutor and for an audience. People who have an innate predisposition to public speaking do not experience problems communicating with people of different genders and ages. Others can master the secrets of public speaking.
Oratory is inextricably linked with public speaking, where the number of listeners can vary. This means that oratory requires a person to be well-read and erudite (this provides a large stock of words and knowledge). It is important to have clear diction, competent language, free of jargons and filler words, as well as good resistance to stress and composure, since speaking in front of a large number of people is always very unpredictable.
Criteria for a Skilled Speaker
If you strive to ensure that your speech is beautiful, understandable and accessible to people, then it will be useful for you to know what criteria a skilled speaker must meet:
- A clearly defined, intelligible voice and good pronunciation. This is the key to a speaker’s beautiful speech. Each word must be clearly pronounced, each sentence must carry a semantic load. Learning this is difficult, but possible.
- Refusal of slang speech and jargon. No matter how fresh, relevant and topical your speech is, it loses value and quality if you dilute it with jargon.
- Loud, smooth and slow speech. It helps your audience to like you and helps listeners better absorb the information they receive from you.
- No lyrical digressions. True speakers speak clearly and concisely. The more you deviate from the topic, the more bored your listeners will become. The quality of brevity must be developed carefully.
- Ability to participate in discussions, debates, and arguments. This is an integral part of oratory. Any speaker has to enter into discussions and arguments with his audience. Here it is extremely important to maintain composure, neutrality, strictly adhere to your position and defend your point of view with reason. This skill can only be developed through constant discussions.
- Elimination of aggression. Whatever reaction to the speaker occurs in the hall, he must remain calm and diplomatically resolve the situation. If someone wants to speak in the hall, the speaker is obliged to listen to him and only then express his point of view.
- Use of sign language. Recognized speakers often use this skill to emphasize certain details in their speech, ask for silence, etc.
The personal qualities of a true speaker include:
- inner calm, composure and self-confidence;
- good memory and imagination;
- insight;
- communication skills.
A strong speaker is a person who always looks well-groomed, neat, moderately dressed and combed. He has good posture, clear eyes and a wide range of knowledge. Great importance is attached to psychological stability, since the mood in the crowd is always unpredictable.
The most important skill of a speaker
Glance is the most important tool of a speaker. Otherwise, he is not a speaker.
When I ask at training what the most important skill of a speaker is, I get a lot of assumptions:
- Gestures
- Diction
- Beautiful speech
- Loud voice...
I agree that all of the above are useful. But there is a primary skill from which it all begins:
Sight
Look is the most important skill of a speaker , without which it is impossible to learn to speak. And we will look at in this chapter:
- Why are people afraid to look
- Where to look
- How to look
- How to quickly learn this
Where is it easier for a novice speaker to watch?
Of course, it’s easier to look anywhere but at the audience.
And I prepared (with my own hands) a small hand-drawn video on this topic.
- By the way, I make all the videos myself. I like it
