How to choose a profession you like: tips and techniques for graduates of grades 9 and 11

Hello, dear readers of dohodinet.ru. It is quite difficult to choose a future specialty and not make a mistake. Yesterday's schoolchildren have almost no life experience, and the advice of adults - parents and teachers - is often perceived with hostility. You can better understand how to choose a profession 1-2 years after graduating from school, and in some Western countries graduates take a break before entering a university.

In Russia it is not customary to do this, and because of this, apparently, so many young specialists do not work in the profile indicated in the diploma. But there are reliable methods and techniques that help in career guidance, but you should contact psychologists-consultants in advance, and not at the time of passing the entrance exams.

Choosing a vocation: soberly assessing the situation

In order for a profession to bring a stable income, to be to one’s liking and strength, several factors should be taken into account.

  1. State of the labor market. If previously a school graduate could choose an occupation for the rest of his life, now he can only dream about it. New specialties are constantly appearing, and old professions, at first glance prestigious and lucrative, are disappearing. Therefore, the choice should be made in favor of promising areas (information technology, high-tech medical specialties) that will be relevant in the coming decades.

The choice of profession is often determined by geography. If moving is impossible or undesirable, you should pay attention to the specialties in demand in the applicant’s region of residence.

  1. Abilities and inclinations of the graduate. Unfortunately, these characteristics do not always coincide: modest and shy girls dream of a career as a singer or TV presenter, and guys with the makings of analytical scientists dream of a career in law enforcement agencies. It is difficult for a teenager to adequately evaluate himself, which is why there are so many attempts to master completely inappropriate professions. Only one thing is obvious: you cannot choose a specialty that causes categorical rejection. Even if it is advised by wise friends and relatives.
  2. Estimated salary level. Financial circumstances, annoyingly enough, also need to be taken into account. If money is more important than self-realization, you should choose a specialty with a high level of income. Hoping that pedagogy, social or cultural budgetary sphere will bring great financial wealth is not too far-sighted.

Advice from psychologists on choosing a specialty

In addition to purely everyday circumstances, one should also take into account the psychological characteristics of the graduate’s personality, which influence the choice of a future specialty.

Temperament

There are four main types of temperament that affect communication style, performance, and propensity for different types of activities.

  1. Choleric. Characterized by increased excitability, energy, and speed of reactions. A choleric person will not be able to do monotonous work for a long time that requires attention to detail. Creative pursuits, activities in extreme conditions, and professions associated with intense interpersonal communication are suitable for him.
  2. Sanguine. The main character traits of a sanguine person are balance, optimism, goodwill, and high efficiency. Sanguine people make excellent leaders and organizers, teachers, journalists, and administrators.
  3. Phlegmatic. A phlegmatic person is characterized by thoroughness, slowness, good performance and high stress resistance. Professions related to constant communication and public speaking are not suitable for him, but in professions that require concentration and attention, he will achieve success. Phlegmatic people should choose medicine, engineering, economics or IT.

Every action has consequences

I think: No matter how right or wrong something may seem to me, this concept has every chance of not matching the vision that my child has. But I know for sure that every action has consequences: those that I can predict right now, and those that I can’t see right now. Regardless of what I choose to do right now, I am responsible for all the consequences of my actions. Just like my child.

I do:

  • I ask my child what consequences he sees for what he is doing now.
  • I clarify with my child what results he wants to achieve with his actions.
  • I share with him my vision of the consequences of his actions.
  • I allow him to act according to his own decision, realizing that he bears full responsibility for his choice.

Choosing a profession: common mistakes

Choosing a specialty that is in demand on the labor market, and at the same time taking into account one’s own inclinations and abilities, is not an easy task not only for a recent graduate, but also for an experienced adult. The most common mistakes when choosing a profession are related to the influence of society, lack of faith in one’s own strengths and insufficient knowledge of life.

  1. Choosing a specialty “for the company.” This is usually what graduates do who are not serious about their future. Question: “Where should I go to study?” does not bother them until the end of school, and at the last moment they join a group of friends or choose a university based on location (closer to home). Of course, such stories do not end well.
  2. Parental pressure. Choosing a future career according to parental orders is a bad option for a modern young man. It’s worth taking into account the advice and recommendations of adults, but it’s still better to make your own dreams come true, rather than your parents’ plans.
  3. Insufficient knowledge about the future profession. Many applicants have little knowledge of the necessary skills and professional requirements, and because of this they choose fields that are not initially suitable for them.
  4. Imitation of idols. A teenager easily transfers sympathy from a person (be it a teacher at school or a celebrity from the world of show business) to the profession in which he is engaged. In this case, one’s own inclinations and life circumstances are not taken into account.
  5. The desire for material independence. In order to have a guaranteed income, many are ready to give up their favorite business and professional calling. As a rule, such stories end in tears: a feeling of disappointment and emotional devastation.

Every person has the right to his own life and any choice in it

I think: My child is a whole independent world. With your ideas, relationships with the outside world and yourself. And like any person, my child has the right to make his own choice. Any: get sick, play football or do math homework. The choice he makes will be the best choice he sees from his point of view.

I do:

  • I remind myself that what I see, know and understand is my point of view based on my life experiences. There are other points of view. And that's okay.
  • I check with my child about why he is making the choices he is making.
  • I ask him: what is important to him in what he does?
  • I tell him what I see as important in what he does or doesn't do.
  • I allow him to do what he sees fit, counting on my support, regardless of his choice.

Tests and techniques that will help you make the right choice

To avoid mistakes in career guidance and understand which profession to choose, special methods, questionnaires and tests have been developed. Psychological diagnostics will help you correctly determine not only the field of activity, but also the specific specialty that will suit the graduate.

Most studies are easy to complete online, but it is better to entrust the interpretation of the results to a professional psychologist.

Map of interests (authors: A. E. Golomshtok, O. G. Filimonova)

A detailed questionnaire with five answer options (I like it very much, I like it, I doubt it, I don’t like it, I really don’t like it). The test includes 174 questions and allows you to determine the areas of activity that are most suitable for a graduate. The technique helps to navigate various professions - from economics and journalism to electrical engineering and woodworking. Newly emerging specialties are also included in modern versions of the questionnaire. The propensity for a particular activity is assessed on a finely differentiated scale (pronounced interest, expressed interest, weak interest, denial and the highest degree of denial of interest).

It will take at least 1.5-2 hours to complete the test and decipher it: the questions require time for reflection and maximum honesty.

Questionnaire to determine professional readiness (L. N. Kabardova)

By passing the test, you can understand what type of activity a person is inclined to (the author does not give specific professional recommendations). All professions are divided into several groups according to their focus on a particular object:

  • a person is an artistic image;
  • man is nature;
  • person - person;
  • man is a sign system;
  • man is technology.

After answering 50 questions, it becomes clear in which professional field a person will be most successful.

The technique can help in career guidance not only for teenagers, but also for adults.

Orientation (I. L. Solomin)

Just like the previous questionnaire, it helps you decide on one of five types of professions (human - technology, sign system, human, nature, artistic image). At the same time, a diagnosis is carried out according to the “performer-creator” parameter and it is determined whether the person is able to repeat existing samples or is capable of creating something new.

Profession matrix (G. V. Rezapkin)

The simplest and most understandable method for diagnosing professional inclinations and interests. Consists of two questions and ten answer options for each of them. To interpret the answers, a table is provided with specific professions, from manager and radiologist to fashion designer and watchman.

Professional associations

The psychologist reads out words (for example, rules, paper, visitor), and the subject must quickly name the profession that he associates with this word. Responses are recorded on a tape recorder or in a notepad and then processed based on the frequency of mention of the profession and the nature of the association. An interesting, albeit controversial way to determine professional preferences.

Professional intentions

An extensive test that analyzes:

  • inclinations and professional intentions;
  • knowledge about the chosen profession;
  • life plans;
  • assessment of one's own professional suitability.

This is a preliminary study for more precise work with graduates after 11th grade. Psychologists give specific professional recommendations after a conversation with the subject.

The test is carried out both individually and in group form.

Numerology and career guidance

You can also choose a suitable profession using numerology. To do this, the numerical values of a person’s first and last name are analyzed. There are special online services for determining a profession by date of birth: they enter numerical data (day, month, year of birth) into the form on the website and receive specific professional recommendations. This method cannot be called serious and scientific, but it also has a right to exist.

Choosing and taking responsibility is a skill

I think: In order to learn how to ride a bicycle, you first need to find a bicycle, and then sit on it and try to ride it. Making decisions and taking responsibility for them is exactly the same skill as riding a bicycle. Since it is important for me that my child learns to make independent decisions, I am ready to patiently devote my time and attention to the process of his learning, realizing that few people even manage to ride a bicycle the first time.

I do:

  • I create situations in which my child can practice making independent decisions, and I support him in any choice.
  • I allow my child to make mistakes and what I perceive as mistakes.
  • I go over with him the steps that led him to the result he has.
  • I wonder what lessons he learned from each experience and how they might influence his choices in the future.

My child is my copy

I think: The main and, up to a certain point, the only thing that my child does is accurately copy the behavior of his parents, that is, us. Everything I like about him is what I like to see in myself. Everything that annoys me about him is something that I refuse to notice about myself. And if I remember how I behave in a similar situation, I will be surprised at the coincidence.

I do: I enjoy doing what I want my child to do. I want to teach him to read - I read regularly and with pleasure.

Tips parents can give their children

Not everyone has to choose the same path

Some kids know exactly what to do after school. They have a clear plan for their future career. Others struggle with the urge to make their own decisions and feel pressure from family and friends. Most parents get angry at the thought of their child wasting a whole year traveling.

However, some guys prefer to take a year off to think and find themselves. They return from the trip having already made their final decision, and enter the university, having become a little older and a little wiser.

Don't be afraid to ask for advice

When faced with making a difficult decision about your life after school, many questions immediately arise. Stop for a minute and realize that you are still on your way to adulthood, and at times you may need advice. Talk to your parents, friends, relatives, even a school psychologist you trust can help. Perhaps you will find some useful tips to help you make the right choice.

Do only what you want

Your family and friends may have already made decisions about their future career, but that doesn't mean you have to do the same right away. There is a reason why the expression “follow your dreams” exists. Now the moment in life has come when you can seriously influence your entire future. It is very important to make this decision yourself, because your life depends on it.

You can always change your mind

A lot of students enter a certain university, college, institute, only because their parents pushed them in this direction, or they themselves first decided to study one thing, and after a year they realized that they were interested in something completely different.

Many guys believe that they have to finish the job because of the influence of some financial problems, or because they are afraid of disappointing someone. But these things shouldn't be the deciding factor. Remember: everyone has the right to follow their dreams, their passions, and you deserve to enjoy your school and work life.

Dedicate yourself to this

Once you have made a choice and planned actions for the future, stick to them. You are the master of your destiny, and everything about life after school actually affects your entire life. This is your path, try your best to achieve success.

It would be a good idea to take tests that take into account types of personal orientation. School and outside psychologists can help with this.

In order to decide on a profession, it is good to do two things:

Take a sheet of paper and divide it into three columns

  • in the first we write those actions that we categorically do not like (for example: talking a lot, being among a crowd, driving a car, etc.) The more detailed the list, the easier it will be to choose later. We do the same in the second and third columns.
  • in the second we write what we can put up with from time to time or under some conditions
  • in the third we write what we like (for example: cooking, talking about something, making new friends, ...., everything you can remember.

Dedicate a day or two to this.
